Trump Remarks on Africa, Haiti, El Salvador New Low for His Presidency

Samantha Power, a former US ambassador to the United Nations, wrote on Twitter that she had "never seen a statement like this by African countries directed at the United Nations".

"These statements, full of hatred and contempt, produce indignation in the Cuban people, proud of the contribution given throughout its history by nationals and their descendants from different latitudes, particularly Africans and Haitians, to the forging of our nationality", said the Ministry in an official statement.

While appearing on MSNBC earlier this week, Lewis spoke to reporter Katy Tur about Trump's alleged comments calling El Salvador, Haiti and several African nations "sh*thole countries" during a bipartisan meeting on immigration.

It was first reported by the Washington Post that Trump had called some nations on the continent 'shithole countries'.

As first reported by the Washington Post, while discussing immigration in the Oval Office on Thursday, the president said, "Why do we want all these people from shithole countries coming here?" in reference to Africa and Haiti, then remarked that people from Norway would be preferable.

Ayene said the undiplomatic word used by the US President that shocked the diplomatic community across the globe will likely have a long-lasting impact.

Mr Trump has denied using that language, but others present said that he did.

The Rev. Robert Jeffress, pastor of First Baptist Dallas and a frequent guest at the White House, said that apart from the president's choice of words, "Trump is right on target in his policy", putting the needs of the US above those of other countries.

According to a Democrat Senator, Dick Durbin, Trump, during a meeting at the White House to consider migrant policies, said, "Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?"

"The Congressional Hispanic Caucus calls on every member of Congress to reject this vile statement, which erodes the moral fiber that binds us together as Americans. There is no other word one can use but 'racist'". He said there were "very fine people on both sides" after violence at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, left one counter-protester dead.

Trump's latest comments also provided ample fodder for talkshow hosts.

"His vision seems to not only be less immigration but more high-skilled", Selee said of Trump, "and that may be the system we're already getting".

Pastor Mark Burns from SC remained skeptical, but said if the remarks were true, Trump was only reacting to poor conditions in Haiti and Africa that were the fault of "lazy governments" there. "I can not leave them alone to hear racist barbs, evil speech, incendiary comment, and blasphemous slander against the image and likeness of God in which they are made". Tom Cotton and David Perdue, said they "do not recall the President saying these comments specifically".

Trump reportedly made the remarks at a White House meeting on immigration on Thursday.

The Mission demanded a retraction of the statement and an apology from the US leader.

"The African Union condemns the comments in the strongest terms and demands a retraction of the comment as well as an apology to not only Africans but to all people of African descent around the globe", it said.

African media outlets and the continent's young, increasingly connected population were not shy, with some tweeting sleek photos of African landscapes and urban areas with the hashtag of the word.

As outrage spread, the USA government's own Africa Media Hub tried to put out the flames.

In a series of tweets on Friday, Trump also suggested that momentum toward a deal on maintaining such protection had stalled.

Botswana summoned the U.S. ambassador to the country to "clarify if Botswana is regarded as a "s***hole" country", according to a foreign ministry statement calling Trump's comments "irresponsible, reprehensible and racist".

In Senegal's capital Dakar, administrator Idrissa Fall said "we can not really say that he (Trump) is wrong".
