Walmart offers free opioid disposal product in effort to fight painkiller abuse epidemic

The company said patients filling any new class II opioid prescriptions at its pharmacies will receive a free packet of the product, called DisposeRx, when filling a new prescription.

Citing data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and the National Institute of Drug Abuse, Walmart said some 65% of opioid abusers get them from unwitting family and friends. The solution solidifies, and can be tossed out, making them inaccessible for illicit use. In 2015, opioid overdoses claimed 91 lives a day in the U.S.

Customers who get "class two" opioids from pharmacies at Sam's Club and Walmart will get a packet "Dispose RX" to get rid of the leftover opioids.

Walmart is targeting the nation's opioid epidemic by offering a free way to dispose of leftover prescriptions.

Walmart has a 5% share of the US prescription market, according to Pembroke Consulting, having filled $20.6 billion worth of scripts in 2016, putting it on par with No. 3 USA drugstore chain Rite Aid.
