A speeding auto ploughed through evening strollers on a crowded sidewalk of Rio's famed Copacabana beach on Thursday (Jan 18) in an apparent accident, killing an eight-month old baby and injuring 15 people, police said.

At least 11 people were reportedly wounded when a vehicle ploughed into pedestrians here at a popular tourist spot early Friday morning, Brazilian police said.

The accident occurred on the boardwalk along Copacabana Beach and at least 11 people were injured, according to a translated Twitter post from the Military Police of Rio de Janeiro State.

Local media has reported that a woman is in a critical condition in hospital, while two other children have also been rushed to the emergency department.

Brazilian authorities said several people were wounded Thursday after a vehicle drove onto a boardwalk in Rio de Janeiro. Local authorities have identified the driver as Antonio de Almeida Anquim.

Photos of the scene showed responders attending to injured people on stretchers.
