District East Judicial Magistrate Zohaib Ahmed sentenced two Chinese nationals involved in stealing money from an ATM to one-year imprisonment and directed them to pay a fine of Rs50,000 each.

The FIA today told the court that the convicts withdrew cash and installed skimming devices in ATMs.

The foreigners were arrested in Bahadurabad and handed over to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), where a case was registered against them.

On the rise in recent days, the incidents of ATM skimming in Karachi appear to have first surfaced in 2016.

A CCTV footage of an ATM booth showed the culprits installing an ATM skimming device.

Pakistan has witnessed a spike in the number of Chinese nationals in the country in recent years due to many Beijing- funded infrastructure development projects and joint ventures under the Dollars 50 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) initiative.

In some instances, the schemers stick a fake card-reader on the ATM, while in others they place a fake keypad on the machine to get the customers PIN code.

Another technique employed in this crime is the use of a hidden camera, which records your PIN code and conveys it to fraudsters.
