"In expectation of their being brought to the DSS headquarters, a team of doctors and psychologists has been placed on standby".

"He commended all those who in one way or the other helped in making the release possible".

Buhari also urged Nigeria's army to intensify its efforts to bring home the remaining Chibok girls who are still being held by Boko Haram, Shehu said.

They include 10 women seized during an attack on a police convoy and three lecturers from Maiduguri taken during an oil exploration trip.

The ICRC said it acted only as a neutral intermediary in the negotiations.

"The ICRC was not involved in any negotiations that led to the handover of the 13 people".

"It's true the 10 women have been released by Boko Haram through the ICRC officials who arrived this afternoon", said a vigilante leader, "they (the women) didn't talk to anyone, they looked exhausted but apparently in good health". This action was similar to what the ICRC did in October 2016 and May 2017, when we transported the released "Chibok girls" to Nigerian officials.

At least 20,000 people have been killed in almost nine years of violence and more than 2.6 million made homeless, triggering a humanitarian crisis across the Lake Chad region. "This creates untold trauma and suffering, including for families across the Lake Chad region, who must live with the daily uncertainty and anguish of not knowing the fate or whereabouts of their loved ones".

The statement emphasised that: "The ICRC remains ready to provide similar humanitarian services in the future when asked by relevant parties to the conflict".

Boko Haram extremists have freed three university lecturers and 10 women who it had kidnapped in separate raids a year ago, Nigeria's government said Saturday.

A group of 10 women were also released, including police officers and civil servants, who were kidnapped near Maiduguri in June.

"Their release followed a series of negotiations as directed by President Muhammadu Buhari and was facilitated by the International Committee of the Red Cross", said Shehu, adding that Buhari was pleased by the news.

All the thirteen rescued persons are in the custody of the members of the Directorate of state security DSS and are on their way to Abuja as at the time of filing this report.
