Performers celebrate the opening of the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea

The 2018 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony delivered stunning visuals, incredible performances and a historic moment as athletes from North and South Korea marched together as a unified Korea - but there was a potentially scary security mishap during the proceedings.

"President Moon responded by saying that the two sides should work on establishing the right conditions to realise the meeting", the South Korean spokesman Kim Eui-kyeom said.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in hosted talks with the delegation on Saturday in the hope that improving relations between the two countries could help resolve differences over the North's nuclear and missile programmes.

The South Korean president has been invited to travel to North Korea, following a formal invitation from the country's leader Kim Jong Un, potentially setting up the first meeting of Korean leaders since 2007.

From the detonation of its hydrogen bomb to test firing an ICBM, North Korea's Kim Jong-un has dictated the course and pace of the crisis.

Tensions between the two soared a year ago as Pyongyang launched intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of reaching the U.S. mainland and carried out by far its most powerful nuclear test to date.

Friday's ceremony will be attended by North Korea's delegation, including its nominal head of state, Kim Yong Nam.

Ms Kim arrived in her brother's private plane with a high-level delegation of 22 officials on the runway of Incheon International Airport prior to the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics.

Pence said the US would "demand at the outset of any new dialogue or negotiations that the Kim regime put denuclearization on the table and take concrete steps with the world community to dismantle, permanently and irreversibly, their nuclear and ballistic missile programs".

"One of the main reasons North Korean athletes don't defect is due to their families back in North Korea", said Benjamin Young, a doctoral candidate at George Washington University who has researched sports in North Korea.

Added Young, "If a North Korean athlete defected, it would be a slap in the face to the Kim regime, and any family members back in North Korea will face severe punishment".

Yong-nam is the President of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly of North Korea.

During his meeting with the four defectors, including some who had been tortured and abused by the North, Pence warned that the world would see "a charm offensive by North Korea" on Friday.

An intruder has been thrown out of the Winter Olympics opening ceremony after sliding down a long icy chute in an attempt to reach two of the performers.
