National Guard helping after chemicals found in DE town's well

DNREC Drinking water distributed in Blades after tests show higher levels of PFC

Drinking water is being distributed, after officials say sampling of a town's wells showed higher levels of a specific chemical, in Blades.

Program Administrator for the Delaware Division of Public Health Office of Drinking Water Keith Mensch says the well contamination was almost double the recommended health advisory level amount, set by the Environmental Protection Agency.

DNREC says the water from the sampled wells are safe to use for bathing and laundry, but can not be used for cooking or drinking. Bottled water was expected to be provided Friday at noon to residents at the Blades Fire Hall.

Alternative sources of drinking and cooking water will be provided until a permanent solution is in place, according to DNREC.

Water will apparently be supplied to the Town of Blades by DNREC and DPH until additional work can determine the extent of PFC contamination in the municipal wells.

Though PFCs are not regulated by the Safe Drinking Water Act, DPH is working with DNREC to minimize any potential health impacts to the community. While much research has been conducted on laboratory animals, the accompanying research related to humans is more limited.

Gov. John Carney has authorized the National Guard to assist residents of a southern DE town after the discovery of high levels of toxic chemicals in municipal wells.

Officials report that the Delaware National Guard has provided two, 400-gallon portable water tanks and coordinated troops to ensure 24-hour water distribution operations out of the Blades Fire Hall. A 5,000-gallon water tanker is also prepared and available for follow-up support.

The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control says on Friday, that they along with the Delaware Division of Public Health are providing bottled water for drinking and cooking to residents of the Town of Blades.
