Union finance minister Arun Jaitley speaks in the Lok Sabha at Parliament on Thursday

Directing his next question to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Yeddyurappa asked him if he had developed "selective amnesia". This was his first visit to the state after he took over as the party chief in December.

BJP Karnataka Unit President B S Yeddyurappa criticised Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for inducting Mr Singh into Congress, saying it proved him to be a "corrupt opportunist".

He claimed the Siddaramaiah-led state government was a "clean" administration.

Sending an un-ambiguous message to potential and current Congress allies, Congress Parliamentary Party leader Sonia Gandhi has said that son Rahul Gandhi "is my boss too", indicating where the buck stops when it comes to taking political calls on key issues in the party.

Gandhi also met the beneficiaries of Article 371-J under which people from the old Hyderabad-Karnataka region are given employment and seats for education on preference and priority.

Launching the yatra from the mine-rich Ballari is significant as Sonia Gandhi had made her maiden entry to Parliament from the district in 1999, when she defeated BJP leader Sushma Swaraj in a fiercely fought contest. The FM accused Congress president of compromising national security by demanding disclosure of details of the Rafale deal. He will also visit the Gavi Siddeswara Mutt.

As part of his 4-day Karnataka visit, Rahul Gandhi will be attending various public gatherings and attend party meetings to further strengthen the position of his party for the upcoming assembly elections in the state.

On Sunday, Gandhi will travel by road for public receptions at Kushtagi, Kankagiri and Gangavati, followed by a public meeting at Karatagi in Koppal district. On the third day, he will visit Raichur, Yadgir and Kalaburgi districts for public receptions, participate in a tribal rally at Devadurga in Raichur district, interact with youth and students at Shahpur in Yadgir district, followed by public meetings at Jewargi and Kalaburgi towns.
