WhatsApp Payment Feature Launched for Beta Testers of iOS and Android

WhatsApp has launched the beta version of its app that allows the users to make payments

WhatsApp is preparing to open its payment platform to the public in India, following a brief closed cabinet testing period, it has been revealed.

The official launch of the feature is likely to boost digital payments in India, considering WhatsApp's popularity, but will also intensify competition for digital wallets.

WhatsApp to be considering a UPI-based payments platform since July 2017. India is WhatsApp's largest market with over 200 million users active daily users. The roll out of WhatsApp payments in India based on UPI was long awaited.

To use this feature, you have to go in WhatsApp settings and set up a bank account link with UPI using the phone number linked to the bank account. This works in the favour of the messaging application as transaction between different digital wallets is still not an option.

Both iOS and Android beta versions of the app were seen on WhatsApp Payments and two publications, GizmoTimes and FoneArena had shared screenshots of the same. The shortcut for Payment shows up in the list of attachments alongside Documents, Gallery, Audio, Location, and Contact.

Users must then configure the feature by first verifying their phone number via SMS and choosing a bank.

WhatsApp has partnered with ICICI Bank for supporting its UPI payment feature.

Moreover, the WhatsApp payments feature seems to be coming exclusively to India.

The feature was, however, limited to a few users and not all Android beta testers were able to see it.

Earlier in January, WhatsApp Business, a free-to-download Android app was rolled out for small businesses, in a bid to make it easier for approximately 1.3 billion users to chat with businesses that matter to them.

Apart from this, the Facebook-owned messaging application is also reportedly working on a group video calling feature.
