The Latest: Pence says NK must give up nukes before talks

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's sister comes home Sunday night after an eventful three days in South Korea, where she sat among some of the world's top-officials at the Olympics and made a diplomatic offer to the South meant to end seven decades of hostility.

In addition to Moon and Kim's sister Kim Yo Jong, the game was attended by Kim Yong Nam, North Korean titular head of state, and International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach.

His comments come after he pressed South Korean President Moon Jae-in Thursday to be clear-eyed about opening talks with North Korea around the Olympic games.

Kim Yo Jong is the first member of her family to set foot in this country since the north and south were divided and her grandfather, Kim Il Sung, founded North Korea.

She verbally conveyed Kim's invitation to Moon "to visit the North at his most convenient time", he added.

The North is under a set of multilayered worldwide sanctions due to its provocations, with U.S. President Donald Trump showing no signs of letting up on a "maximum pressure' campaign to press the North to give up its nuclear arsenal". In a message in a guest book, she wrote: "I hope Pyongyang and Seoul will become closer in the hearts of Koreans and will bring unification and prosperity in the near future".

A foreign resident living in the North Korean capital, Pyongyang, told Reuters he had seen fewer people in restaurants and luxury goods in shops in recent months. On the same day, Moon and the North's delegation also jointly attended the opening match of the unified women's ice hockey team, which is comprised of athletes from the two Koreas. "Moon should be aware that he has to urge denuclearisation to North Korea by himself, not depending on dialogue between the USA and North Korea".

They were on both sides of the ice, chanting back and forth.

At an earlier VIP reception for delegation leaders, Pence arrived late and stayed for just 5 minutes - and did not interact with the delegation from the North.

USA officials have been urging South Korea to be cautious in its rapprochement with the North - a point Pence drilled home in private meetings with Moon on Thursday.

A visit by Moon to the North would enable the first summit between leaders from the two Koreas since 2007, and would mark only the third inter-Korean summit to take place.

As the first medals were being won at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, we got our first glimpse of the North Korean "cheerleaders".

A senior United States administration official told reporters that Pence did not discuss North Korea's invitation to Moon when the two leaders watched short track speed skating together.

As the opening ceremony began, Kim and Moon exchanged a handshake and spoke briefly. "This small step will pave the way for inter-Korean peace", 44-year-old office worker Oh Eun Seok said. He has not even been to China, North Korea's traditional ally, as leader and has snubbed recent high-ranking visitors. Analysts say that the missiles, which were successfully flight tested three times previous year, could potentially reach deep into the USA mainland when perfected.

The North is a notoriously tough negotiator, adamant that it needs its "treasured sword" of nuclear weapons to defend itself against the threat of invasion by the United States, and will never give them up. "The North is not interested in talks on denuclearisation".

In that regard, Kim Jong Un has scored a victory this week.

On Saturday morning, after the opening ceremony, Pence tweeted his agreement with former Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton, who had said on Fox News that the positioning of North Korea near South Korea at the opening ceremony was a "propaganda charade" by North Korea.
