Fred Warmbier: North Korea 'not really participating' in Winter Olympics

The opening ceremony of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics was briefly interrupted Friday, after security had to remove US President Donald J. Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un from the stadium.

However, Politico suggested that Warmbier's presence - on the invitation of Pence - was similar to former President Barack Obama taking openly gay athletes Billie Jean King and Caitlin Cahow to Sochi, Russia, in 2014.

Washington calls it a campaign of "maximum pressure". "And we hope you take the comment as it is".

Such a summit, if it came about, would mark the first time that leaders of the two Koreas have met since 2007.

North Korea did prove it was capable of a charm offensive, a stark contrast from the past year when Kim Jong Un and President Trump have traded insults and dire threats.

Pyongyang conducted its largest nuclear test a year ago and in November tested its most advanced intercontinental ballistic missile that experts said has the range to reach anywhere in the United States.

Based on that assurance, Pence was cited as saying he felt confident he could endorse post-Olympic engagement with Pyongyang.

"In the days before the Olympics, all the news was about Kim, not South Korea", she said.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The South Koreans want to use the Olympics to ease tensions spurred by North Korea's pursuit of nuclear weapons.

On the first day, the DPRK delegation attended the opening ceremony of the 23rd Winter Olympics held in South Korea's eastern county of PyeongChang. In addition to sending 22 athletes to compete at the games in Pyeongchang, North Korea also deployed a 229-strong all-female cheering squad to root for both nations.

Praise has also poured in from International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach, who as urged the South and the North Korean players of the joint women's ice hockey team that they should be proud despite the big loss to Switzerland in the opening game.

And though the apparent thawing of tensions on the Korean Peninsula was well-received internationally, Boston University worldwide relations professor Joseph Wippl said it could all be part of an effort by Kim Jong Un to extend the negotiating process.

Smiling, he shook hands with each of the delegates ahead of their talks, and television footage showed that Kim Yo Jong - who analysts expected to bring a personal message from her brother - was carrying a blue folder emblazoned with a seal.

A Unification Ministry official in Seoul said that Pyongyang is believed to have said during discussions that it will not receive the fuel supply in order not to cause any trouble to South Korea.
