"I was self medicating with alcohol because that's what I thought was making me happy to help me get out of that depression to a point where I felt like I had some sense of happiness", the former Heisman Trophy victor said during an exclusive interview on "Good Morning America" on Monday.

During a sit-down with Good Morning America that aired Monday, Manziel said he's taking medication as a result of being diagnosed with bipolar disorder roughly a year ago.

In an interview with Good Morning America, Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Johnny Manziel is going public in an effort to get back to the NFL.

As for his battle with booze - Manziel explained, "I was self-medicating with alcohol".

"I had a sense of entitlement about what I had accomplished at the age I accomplished it and I got so ingrained in only caring about what Johnny wanted", Manziel said. "When I would wake up the next day after a night like that, going on a trip like that, and you wake up the next day and that is all gone, that liquid courage, or that liquid ... sense of euphoria that is over you, is all gone". And you're back in the depression and back in that hole - that dark hole of sitting in a room by yourself being super depressed, thinking about all the mistakes you have made in your life. Where did that get me except out of the NFL?

Former Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel says he wants to return to the National Football League and adds that he has cleaned his life up since a series of incidents that ultimately got him cut from the team that drafted him. It's what I thought was making me happy and get out of the depression to a point of where I felt I had some sense of happiness. But I know that if I stay on the meds and continue to what I'm doing right now, I think my dad, my mom, Bre, I think would all agree that they've seen a drastic change.

"I can't help that my wires are a little bit differently crossed than yours". He says he's not drinking anymore. "I can't help my mental makeup or the way that I was created".

"But at the end of the day it's to be seen", he added.

"You don't understand when people come up to us and say what the hell is your son doing?"

With respect to his potential football comeback, Manziel isn't sure what that will look like, but he knows he ultimately wants to return to the game that brought him so much joy.
