It's by far the most sustained public presence for Kim, who had been something of a mystery to many South Koreans, despite her known role in North Korea's politburo.

Seoul's Unification Ministry said Friday that the Mangyongbong-92 will return to the North on Saturday.

The two Koreas have been divided since the conflict ended in a ceasefire in 1953, and the democratic South has risen to become the world's 11th-largest economy, while the North has stagnated under the Kim family's rule. "We wanted the North Koreans to see the vice president, Abe and Moon sitting directly in front of them for the Opening Ceremonies, and it would show that that alliance is strong".

Earlier, Moon warmly greeted North Korea's 90-year-old nominal head of state, Kim Yong Nam, as they attended the VIP reception.

Lee also said that inter-Korean talks should continue after the Olympics.

South Korean Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon on Sunday hosted a lunch for the high-ranking North Korean delegation, including Kim Jong-un's younger sister. Pence's trip began in Japan, stopped in Seoul, and culminated with his visit to the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics opening ceremony.

Moon said improved relations between the Koreas may be a step toward resolving the nuclear standoff.

Moon's desire to engage North Korea was in contrast to his USA ally.

The North-South Olympics detente has raised concerns in Washington and Tokyo that Seoul may ease up on a "maximum pressure" campaign by the United States and its allies to get Pyongyang to abandon its nuclear and missile programs. Earlier Friday, Pence met with defectors from the North and invited them to tell their stories of repression under Pyongyang.

A senior US official said Pence and Moon, while watching speed skating together on Saturday night, discussed intensifying sanctions. A joint ice hockey team, comprising of both North and South Korean players will take part in the Winter Games. Speaking to NBC's "Nightly News" on Thursday, the vice president continued to stress that the United States would protect itself from North Korean nuclear threats by taking whatever "action is necessary to defend our homeland".

On page two it printed seven more of the opening ceremony and its representatives' meetings and handshakes with Moon, whom it described as president.

Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon (R) shakes hands with Kim Yo-jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, during a lunch meeting in Seoul on February 11, 2018.

Japan and South Korea share a bitter history that includes Japan's 1910-45 colonization of the peninsula and the use of "comfort women", a euphemism for women - many Korean - forced to work in Japanese wartime brothels. In January 1968, Kim Yo Jong's grandfather, founding North Korean president Kim Il Sung, sent a squad of North Korean commandos to Seoul who tried unsuccessfully to kill then-president Park Chung-hee.
