Mattis Says North Korea Can't Drive Wedge Between South, US

Kim Jong-un's smiling sister exploits Trump-Moon divide over North Korea

Her picture, often with a bemused half-smile, has been splashed across newspapers.

On Sunday, South Korean President Moon Jae-in sat next to Kim's powerful sister at a concert in Seoul by musicians from Pyongyang.

The vice president's visit was also marked by bad blood between Pence and some US athletes. Hoping to discern what she's thinking, analysts pored over video of her eyes, and remarked on the tilt of her chin.

South Korea, ranked 21st, will play its first Group A game against the sixth-ranked Czech Republic on Thursday, followed by the seventh-ranked Switzerland on Saturday.

The North's delegation to the Games also includes the country's ceremonial head of state as well as hundreds of female cheerleaders. Kim Yo Jong is 28 years old, according to the USA government. "We can't say right now".

Yo-jong's visit to the South was the first visit by a member of the ruling Kim family ever since the Korean War ended in 1953. But rather than presenting herself as a stiff party operative, she has looked engaged and interested during multiple outings in Seoul, Pyeongchang and Gangneung.

Accepting North Korea's demand to transport more than 100 members of the art troupe by sea, South Korea treated the Mangyongbong-92 ferry as an exemption to the maritime sanctions it imposed on the North, a controversial move amid concerns that the North is trying to use the Olympics to poke holes in global sanctions. Before now, she had been seen mainly in photos, but often in the background, as her brother took center stage.

US President Donald Trump and the North Korean leadership traded insults and threats of nuclear war as tensions rose, with Trump repeatedly dismissing the prospect or value of talks with North Korea.

Sunday's KCNA report cited Moon as saying inter-Korean relations should be mended by the parties concerned "at any cost as indicated by Chairman Kim Jong Un in his New Year Address".

One telling incident came early.

Some set a North Korean flag on fire before police intervened, and others chanted 'Let's tear Kim Jong Un to death!' as they ripped up posters bearing his portrait.

The younger Kim, who came here as a special envoy of the DPRK leader, delivered the DPRK leader's invitation for Moon to visit Pyongyang at Moon's convenient time. The North Korean orchestra will return home on Monday after their second and last performance on Sunday.

Pence left South Korea Saturday night, flying out of Pyeongchang after attending a short-track speedskating event with Moon - who then went to watch ice hockey along with Kim and the North Korean delegation.

He said the North was using the Winter Games for crude propaganda.

While the Winter Games are just starting to heat up this week, already success has been made for a stretch in world peace with the inclusion of North Korea into the games, proving once again how the power of sports can truly change the world. They've been called an element of the northern regime's "charm offensive" - a claim that's also been made against Kim Yo Jong during this visit. Throw in there the accusations that South Korea has had to arrange huge payouts for past meetings, and that these earlier encounters, while certainly producing indelible images, have done little to slow North Korea's pursuit of nuclear weapons.

He added that the Washington Post also entered the controversy by publishing a piece with a headline fashioned from a quote from one of their sources.
