Voting underway in NA-154 by-elections

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) candidate Ali Tareen and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz's (PML-N) candidate Iqbal Shah on Monday have been fined Rs40,000 and Rs30,000 respectively as the polling in Lodhran by-elections is underway.

According to a letter dated February 11, the district monitoring officers, Shah was slapped with a fine because "as per reports received in the office of the DRO, Abdul Rehman Khan Kanju MNA/Minister of State appeared to have attended/addressed corner meetings for promoting election campaign of Muhammad Iqbal Shah".

The Lodhran by-poll is being seen as a litmus test for the PTI in the build-up to the upcoming general elections scheduled this year around August.

However, a tough contest is expected among Pakistan People's Party (PPP) candidate Mirza Muhammad Ali Baig, PTI's Tareen and PML-N's Shah, reported Radio Pakistan.

The NA-154 seat fell vacant after the Supreme Court of Pakistan disqualified the PTI leader Jahangir Khan Tareen on December 15, 2017 under article 62 (1)(f) of the Constitution.

He was de-seated for deliberately submitting a false statement in the Supreme Court to hide his property in the United Kingdom.

In total, 338 polling stations have been set up in the constituency, whereat 431,002 voters will exercise their right to vote.
