Volkswagen has revealed the new Touareg, which will be officially unveiled on March 23 in Beijing.

Volkswagen says it's head of design Klaus Bischoff, and his team have given the new Touareg an unmistakable appearance that is strong in character.

Volkswagen said that the new Touareg will include "a phalanx of innovative assistance systems gives it a maximum degree of safety and comfort" and "one of the largest digital cockpits in its class, the Innovision Cockpit". Its connectivity makes it a driving internet node. The third-gen Touareg will also come with air suspension and rear-wheel steering and roll stabilisation.

The sketch, and various spy shots doing their rounds on the web, show a more muscular shape, while the front end gets a large grille with bars that flow into the headlights, closely resembling last year's T-Prime GTE Concept (below), from which the new Touareg seems to draw much of its design inspiration.

Based on the VW Group MLB chassis and underpinnings, the first impressions of the new Touareg show that it will be sleeker than the previous generation and is likely to incorporate numerous latest design features found on VW models, such as the modern grille found on the Arteon.
