Pence raises prospect of United States talks with North Korea -…

At the stadium Pence sat one row in front of the North Koreans, but even with Kim Jong Yo just behind him, he never even turned around to exchange pleasantries - Pence had "no interaction" with her, according to press reports.

South Korea accommodated both the North Korean government officials and members of the art troupe at the Walkerhill hotel in Seoul. But when the first inter-Korean summit happened in June 2000, North Korea had frozen its nuclear power plant under the Geneva Accords, while the second summit in October 2007 took place after Seoul and Pyongyang signed an agreement on nuclear disarmament.

That is the assessment of a former South Korean government minister and political experts who say the North has used the Games to drive a wedge between South Korea and its US ally and to potentially ease pressure on its sanctions-crippled state.

Even Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who has shared the American skepticism of warming inter-Korean relations and pressed Moon against falling for the North's "smile diplomacy", greeted Kim Yong Nam. Pence and the Kims seemed to go out of their way not to acknowledge each other.

The diplomatic honor bestowed upon North Korea was rare: Moon met Kim Yo Jong, the first time a member of the Kim dynasty has ever visited the country, four times during the visit. The presence of Fred Warmbier, whose son was brutalized by the North Korean regime, was largely overlooked, and the same was true for Pence's meeting with North Korean defectors, people who risked everything to escape to freedom.

The opening part of the talks was mostly about the weather: Pyeongchang was colder than Seoul, it was agreed.

At the luncheon proposed a toast, calling for peace and "mutual prosperity" for the two Koreas. It is not every day when a senior US and North Korean official are in the same venue - let alone sitting in the same section of the bleachers.

The Winter Olympics are being held in the South Korean city Pyeongchang. They also made plans to attend a concert together on Sunday, to see a North Korean orchestra perform in Seoul.

Some burnt North Korean flags and photos of Kim Jong Un at the rally.

Kim Yo Jong told Moon that relations would improve quickly once he meets with her brother. Officials didn't reveal what was written in it.

A historic moment of unity, two women who play on the unified Korean ice hockey team carried the Olympic torch for the last leg of its journey at the opening ceremony for the 2018 Pyeongchang Games. The Koreans were crushed by Switzerland, 8-0.

Does Mr. Pence pretend he wasn't in effect giving the middle digit to all involved in spreading the Kim-Moon toro feces?

"The vice president is grateful that President Moon reaffirmed his strong commitment to the global maximum pressure campaign and for his support for continued sanctions", Pence spokeswoman Alyssa Farah said when asked about the development.

If Moon accepts the invitation without North Korea promising to abandon its nuclear development, it would constitute a break in global efforts to contain North Korea and cause a serious rift in the solidarity of the three countries.

"I leave here very confident that we are going to continue to do the things we've known have to be done to continue to pressure North Korea to abandon their nuclear ambitions", Pence said.

Moon can only visit North Korea on one condition - that Kim agrees once and for all to give up his nuclear weapons.

"Now is not the time to postpone U.S".

But Pence had a golden chance nonetheless to establish some degree of contact with the North Korean regime to deliver a message to the fat man in Pyongyang.

But Moon, a liberal who has always wanted to engage the North, will also have to convince a good portion of his own people who are deeply wary about North Korean intentions.

Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera said Saturday that past talks have failed and allowed the progress of North Korea's nuclear and missile programs. This prospect is made even more hard with the U.S.

It's the same greeting many of us long to tell North Korea's bloody dictator audibly in person.

Pence had not been trying to avoid the North Koreans at the Olympic opening ceremony but had been trying to ignore them, the senior administration official said, adding that the North Koreans weren't the reason Pence was there.

U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said on Sunday it was too early to tell whether a diplomatic detente between the two Koreas at the Winter Olympics would lead to results, but the move had not driven a wedge between Washington and Seoul.
