This involved climbing an insane 999 steps, with around 99 turns to get to the top, becoming the first production vehicle to do so.

The Range Rover Sport PHEV may use the most modern of powertrains, but it certainly looks to have Land Rover's USP firmly in place.

The Range Rover climb was even more impressive given it was done in a showroom spec model.

It's combined with an electric motor for a combined output of 398 hp.

Panasonic Jaguar Racing's Ho-Pin Tung piloted the record attempt after hours of training to get the angles right. The on-board Terrain Response all-wheel drive system was engaged up the 45-degree staircase.

And it's then able to skip effortlessly up the ancient stairs through the misty cloud - being careful not to lose power and risk crashing back to earth.

The Range Rover PHEV is the first vehicle to reach the Heaven's Gate landmark top of Tianmen Mountain, having first taken on a treacherous seven-mile road - known locally as Dragon's Road -before climbing 999 steps and navigating 99 turns to reach its final destination.

"I've experienced Formula E, Formula 1 and won at the 24 Hours of Le Mans but this was, without doubt, one of the most demanding driving challenges I've ever faced", said driver Ho-Pin Tung.

Land Rover has taken the new Range Rover Sport Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) for a run up China's Dragon Road, and scaling the heights of Heaven's Gate - the first time for an SUV.

Previous exploits include a record-setting hill-climb at Pikes Peak, a record crossing of the "Empty Quarter" desert in the Arabian Peninsula and a 2,170m descent of the legendary Inferno downhill course in Mürren, Switzerland.
