Detroit Red Wings defenseman Mike Green and right wing Gustav Nyquist react after Green scored a goal during the third period of an NHL hockey game against the New York Islanders Friday Feb. 9 2018 in New York

With AP PhotosTomas Tatar scored his second goal of the game 2:47 into overtime, and the Detroit Red Wings avoided a second straight embarrassing loss with a 5-4 victory against the Washington Capitals. A 4-1 lead entering the third period was dwindled down throughout the final period which led to an exciting finish.

Justin Abdelkader tied things up nicely for the Wings later in the period following a Capitals turnover at center ice.

Jimmy Howard made 23 saves in his first win since January 5.

The Red Wings had a 2-on-1 breakaway and winger Tomas Tatar beat Capitals goalie Braden Holtby to spoil a remarkable comeback from the Capitals.

The Red Wings responded with four straight goals, including three during a dominant performance in the second.

Luke Glendening, Anthony Mantha and Tomas Tatar scored 3 minutes apart during the second period on Sunday at Capital One Arena, but the Washington Capitals rallied to push the game past regulation.

Dmitry Orlov was up next as he slotted home a one-timer for his eighth goal of the season.

Alex Ovechkin (power play) opened Washington's scoring.

Our highlights end with Tatar's victor in overtime.

Washington pulled Holtby for an extra attacker with 2:16 left - and they even had a 6-on-4 advantage when Detroit's Dan Dekeyser was called for holding.

The goals, however, weren't just on Holtby. A second kill went much better, with the Wings twice skating the puck into the offensive zone and Ovechkin failing on three shot attempts.

The Wings were shorthanded for 5 minutes against the Islanders because Tyler Bertuzzi took a retaliatory penalty on Cal Clutterbuck, who sold the slash to officials. It led to his being a healthy scratch on Sunday.
