Top Trump aides defend White House response to Porter abuse allegations

Counselor to the President Kellyanne Conway was forced to defend President Trump's treatment of women after the president, again, stood up for a man accused of abuse.

But we certainly wish him well.

'I would say, 'Jeez, you know, I knew about it.

She said the job of White House chief of staff John Kelly was not in jeopardy over his handling of the matter. Critics say he badly mishandled the situation, possibly even exposing one of the ousted aides to the risk of blackmail.

"I have no reason not to believe the women", Conway added.

Trump made no mention of the ex-wives of the two former staffers, or of the alleged abuse.

Several women have accused Trump of sexual misconduct before he assumed office, claims he dismisses as lies.

Nicolle Wallace, political commentator and former White House communications chief, speaks during a Bloomberg Politics panel with David Plouffe, chief advisor of Uber Technologies Inc., not pictured, on the sidelines of the Republican National Convention (RNC) in Cleveland, Ohio, U.S., on Wednesday, July 20, 2016.

"If he hasn't already been abusive with Hope (Hicks), he will be", she said.

Porter's ex-wives detailed the allegations to the Federal Bureau of Investigation over the course of a routine background check, they told CNN.

"I spoke with the president last night about this very issue and he wanted me to reemphasize to everyone, including this morning that he has full confidence in his current chief of staff General John Kelly and that he is not actively searching for replacements", Conway said in an interview with ABC's This Week.

President Donald Trump said Saturday that lives were being "shattered" by allegations that may be false after two of his White House aides quit over domestic abuse accusations.

Trump initially defended Porter, whom Kelly praised as a "man of true integrity".

While reports say that the Federal Bureau of Investigation was told of allegations against Porter a year ago - and that Kelly had long known of them - Conway said Trump found out only along with other Americans.

Porter is accused by two ex-wives of physical and verbal abuse.

White House legislative director Marc Short denied that Trump personally waived Porter's interim security clearance, as the Federal Bureau of Investigation made further checks on his background, to allow him to handle the highly classified documents that flow to the president's desk.

However, Short told "Meet the Press" that Kelly had not offered his resignation, and Conway told CNN anchor Jake Tapper that Kelly's job is not in jeopardy.

"He's up to his neck in it", Maloney said, noting the Federal Bureau of Investigation rigorously vets applicants for security clearances.

Maloney said the Federal Bureau of Investigation rigorously vets applicants for security clearances and that Porter should have been stopped.

White House Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney told CBS's "Face the Nation" that Porter "wasn't entirely forthcoming" with Kelly when the allegations were brought forward.

Porter's first wife, Colbie Holderness, revealed an image of herself with a blackened eye in 2005, which she said she received from Porter punching her while they were on vacation in Florence, Italy.
