Turkish Helicopter Shot Down By Kurdish Militia In Syria's Afrin, Says Erdogan

A Turkish army helicopter was shot down by Syrian Kurdish YPG fighters near the north Syrian town of Afrin, President Tayyip Erdogan said on Saturday.

A helicopter is seen firing two rockets in the area as plumes of smoke from the crash rise over the trees.

More than 800 civilians also were reported injured, the United Nations human rights office said.

"We don't have exact evidence or document to determine that it went down with any outside interference", said Binali Yildirim.

Turkey considers the group a terrorist organisation and an extension of an insurgency within its own borders that has fought for Kurdish autonomy for more than three decades.

Twenty one Turkish soldiers have died since the beginning of the operation.

Hundreds have been killed and wounded in the violence as the Syrian government and its allies sought to consolidate their hold on remaining opposition-controlled areas.

United Nations human rights chief Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein on Saturday accused Syrian forces of carrying out "no-holds-barred" military offensives.

The commissioner said the "no-holds-barred nature" of the assault included attacks on nine medical facilities and the death of 277 civilians between February 4 and February 9 in both Idlib and eastern Ghouta.

According to the statement, the United Nations office staff has received reports and video footage suggesting that "toxic agents" may have been released following airstrikes Sunday on a residential area of Saraqeb.

Western powers have expressed alarm over the government's campaign against rebel-held Eastern Ghouta, where 400,000 people have been besieged since 2013.

The position on the resolution of Syria's ally Russian Federation was not yet known.

"After seven years of paralysis in the (UN) Security Council, the situation in Syria is crying out to be referred to the International Criminal Court, as well as for a much more concerted effort by (s) tates to bring peace", he said.

Calling for "urgent worldwide action" to protect civilians, Zeid also slammed what he called an "epic failure of global diplomacy" to end the seven-year-old war.
