Kim Jong Un's sister Kim Yo Jong greeted Moon Jae In at the Pyeongchang opening ceremony.

"He was going to leave immediately after taking the group photo session but President Moon urged him to "see friends" so he dropped by the reception venue briefly".

The North's representative, its highest-level official ever to visit the South, was placed between Olympics chief Thomas Bach and United Nations secretary-general Antonio Guterres. CGTN's Jack Barton reports from Seoul.

Kim Yo-jong was earlier considered part of a high-level North Korean delegation to the PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games, but Cheong Wa Dae spokesman Kim Eui-kyeom said she was here as a special envoy of the North Korean leader.

Kim Yo-jong invited Moon to visit "at the early date possible", a spokesman for South Korea's Presidential Palace said.

Pence said Friday that the US would oppose talks between the two Koreas until the North agreed to open negotiations on ending its nuclear program. It was set to be followed by a lunch hosted by Moon.

While the animosity between North and South Korea was put on hold as the two delegations marched as one under the skeptical eyes of U.S. Vice President Mike Pence, there was no tension on stage as stunning visuals made for a spectacular kickoff to the Winter Games. Her unprecedented encounter with Moon caught the world's attention in an opening ceremony that highlighted the themes of peace and harmony.

The two countries have also formed a joint women's hockey team, which consists of 23 South Koreans and 12 North Koreans.

This will be the fourth time the president meets the official delegation of Pyongyang after arriving in the South on Friday with Kim Yong-nam, the top DPRK lawmaker, in charge.

Kim, who retired after winning a silver medal in Sochi, performed a brief skating routine before sending flames shooting up to light the cauldron.

The handwritten invitation was delivered by Mr Kim's influential sister, Kim Yo-jong, at a landmark meeting in the presidential palace in Seoul, before the Winter Olympics.

Kim Yo Jong, a senior member of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea, is reportedly in charge of arranging her brother's "field guidance" trips and publicity.

"As the last torchbearer I was able to participate in the ceremony and as an athlete myself it was great honour for me", she told a news conference on Saturday. It was only at the start of this year, and after many additional rounds of sanctions, that Kim Jong-un finally accepted the olive branch.
