Former Sydney lord mayor and ex Wallabies captain Sir Nicholas Shehadie has died aged 92

One of the architects of the inaugural Rugby World Cup, Wallabies great Sir Nicholas Shehadie, has died in Sydney aged 91.

Shehadie, a tall and powerful prop regarded as one of the best to have played the game, was the first man to play 100 games for the Wallabies during an global career stretching from 1946 to 1958.

Playing in the years of long tours, he earned 114 caps for the Wallabies between 1947-58, which included 30 Tests - a record at the time.

Shehadie, a former Lord Mayor of Sydney, used his diplomatic and lobbying skills at the International Rugby Board to overcome opposition to the World Cup concept from some northern hemisphere nations.

Shehadie was knighted in 1976 for his mayoral service, becoming only the second Wallaby to receive the honour after Sir Edward "Weary" Dunlop.

"(He was) a wonderful, wonderful Australian. a attractive man", Jones said.

He was also appointed a companion of the Order of Australia in 1990. "It's going to leave a hole in the heart of many because people like Nick Shehadie don't come along very often".

Former Prime Minister Toby Abbott tweeted "Sir Nicholas Shehadie improved everything he was involved with".

The husband of former NSW governor Dame Marie Bashir held several distinguished positions including chairman of SBS and chairman of the NSW Rugby Union.

"He improved rugby as Wallaby captain, improved our city as lord mayor and even managed to improve SBS as its chairman", Abbott wrote.

The Australian Olympic Committee on Monday paid tribute to Shehadie's wide-ranging contribution to Australian and world sport. "He radiated warmth and was perfectly at home in a boardroom or a bar". A great Australian on many levels. An inspiration to rugby union and the broader sport community. "Thoughts are with Marie Bashir and their family". He is survived by his wife and three children.
