Winter Olympics 2018: North and South Korea march together

The 2018 Winter Olympics kicked-off in Pyeongchang, South Korea yesterday, and like any Olympics event, it began with a big, flashy opening ceremony.

The games have already come under attack from hackers: Last month, McAfee said that it detected attacks in the months leading up to the games, in the form of malicious e-mails sent to Olympic officials.

Camera flashes; mobs of reporters: Through it all, Kim has maintained a placid smile - and despite Pence's stated intention to reinforce North Korea's isolation during his Olympic visit, the sister of the repressive regime's leader seems to have spent at least as much time with Moon as Pence did.

The figures from the two Koreas shared kimchi (Korean pickled cabbage) and soju rice liquor, and spoke for three hours.

President Donald Trump, as well as several US allies, have agreed to halt all military exercises until after the Olympics, Pence said.

How will the USA react?

The Trump administration is cautious of Seoul falling for North Korea's charm offensive during the Winter Olympics, which are taking place amid tension over Pyongyang's nuclear programme.

The attack hit WiFi systems before the opening ceremonies, and shuttered a website for the games.

Mr Pence stayed seated when the athletes of the host nation marched into the arena alongside those from the North. "We will see when this is going to happen".

Before the torch was lit, our five tiny tour guides emerged from the darkness, holding candles that symbolized the 2016 presidential protests in South Korea, as four well-known Korean singers - Ha Hyun-woo, Jeon In-kwon, Lee Eun-ju, and Ahn Ji-young - crooned John Lennon's "Imagine".

South Korean President Moon Jae-in has been using the Games in his efforts to break the ice with the North and pave the way for talks over the North's weapons programme.

North and South Korea may be bitterly divided, but at the Olympics, they are anything but.

Mr Moon's office said the two Koreas "shared an understanding that they should continue the positive mood for peace and recognition" from the Olympic Games.

However, analyst Robert E Kelly of Pusan National University tweeted that the inter-Korean relations would "return to form".

Who is Kim Yo-jong?

During their meeting, she invited him to visit North Korea.

It was already known that Kim Yo Jong is an adviser to her brother; now many are interpreting her presence here - and the freedom with which she seems to behave - as new signs of the power she holds. The ball now is in the US's court to counter North Korea's bid of regaining trust. After releasing her first English-language EP "Lifted" in August 2016, the singer kicked off her first North American tour from October to November the same year.

Later on Saturday Ms Kim, Kim Yong-nam and Moon Jae-in attended the first ice hockey match played by a unification team of athletes from both North and South Korea, against Switzerland. But in 2014 in Sochi, the committee took serious measures to guard against garden-variety cyber criminals looking to abscond with anything they could steal from the thousands of global visitors in attendance, something that has been happening for years and will probably never cease regardless of where the games are held.
