We've been reporting on Samsung's smart speaker powered by Bixby for what feels like a long time (July, 2017 to be exact), and each time we think we have an idea of when it will launch, Samsung says something different.

In December, Bloomberg reported that Samsung wanted to launch its Bixby speaker in the first half of 2018. The release is said to be earlier than expected, DJ Koh, Samsung's mobile division CEO, revealed during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Samsung have been rumoured to be releasing a Bixby-powered speaker since the middle of previous year and today they have gone on record and given a time-frame for its release. Just like the Galaxy S9 Plus, the Galaxy Note 9 would have a vertically arranged dual camera system on the back.

"In December past year, we began taking applications for the public beta version".

Presumably, this speaker will connect with Samsung's SmartThings network to control all your smart home devices via voice assistant commands through the Bixby platform. According to the Yonhap News Agency, Samsung is now testing the beta version of Bixby 2.0 with more than 800 partners.

The new Samsung Galaxy S9 models play home to the latest version of Bixby. This makes sense as Samsung has the whole bouquet of its Smart Things IoT ecosystem.

We can also expect the Galaxy Note 9 to have an improved Bixby virtual assistant.

Previous reports have suggested that Samsung's Bixby Speaker will be at the center of its Connected Vision household.

Samsung confirmed during MWC 2018 that Bixby 2.0 will arrive later this year alongside the Galaxy Note 9. But Project Ambience is more of an accessory than a lower-tier device. Addressing one of the biggest user complaints, the Korean company relocated the fingerprint reader to below the camera module on the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus to make it easier to unlock the device. But the company also lets its products play nice with others, another point against Apple.

Samsung said this month it wants to "remove the complicated steps that are often required to complete everyday tasks and chores".

It also comes with built-in speakers to stream music directly. For more on that, see the previous coverage below.
