England national selector to step down amid scouting revamp

New Approach for England Men's Selection

New Approach for England Men's Selection

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has confirmed that James Whitaker will step down from his role as England's national selector at the end of the month.

After five years in charge of the selection panel, and a decade as a selector, Whitaker will be replaced before the summer.

Under its revamp, England will bring in a scouting system with a minimum of 12 "discipline-specific scouts".

This season will see the introduction of a scouting system with designated discipline-specific scouts, including the current European Central Bank national lead coaches, providing information to a three-strong selection panel, made up of a new National Selector, a full-time independent England Selector and the England Head Coach.

Andrew Strauss, the England director, has been reviewing the England set up since the Ashes defeat but said in a statement his decision is not a reaction to results.

We will have a greater body of information, deeper insight into the talent we can pick and a better understanding of who to help develop across the red-ball and white-ball games.

The ECB aims to have a new national selector in place for May's Test series with Pakistan, while selectors Angus Fraser and Mick Newell will remain in their current roles until new posts have been filled. They are free to apply for either new job but if successful, would have to stand down from their roles at Nottinghamshire and Middlesex.

The England selector will report into the national selector, who has overall responsibility for selection for all England men's senior squads along with the Lions programme and U19 squads.

Yesterday's announcement that James Whitaker will be standing down from his role as national selector is about more than personalities; it is recognition that selection has become more demanding and that the structure requires an overhaul.

However, there have been a number of low moments, including a second successive miserable Ashes campaign Down Under while England have lost nine of their most recent 11 Tests overseas.

Of his role with England, James Whitaker said: "It has been an huge privilege and an honour for me to have been an England selector for the last ten years. I am very proud of what the team has achieved during this period and will always treasure the memory of those four different Ashes series wins and our first ever victory in an ICC global event".

"I have been involved for a decade now and it feels that the time is right, with this new approach, for me to move on".
