Irish PM rejects idea of border pre-registration after Brexit

Unlike Boris Johnson and David Davis the EU’s negotiators have visited the Irish border

David Davis, Boris Johnson, Theresa May and Oliver Robbins have not visited the Irish border, despite it being a key part of current talks.

May has been to Northern Ireland twice since 2016 but has not visited the border, in contrast to the EU Brexit negotiator Michel Barner, who has been twice, and the European parliament's Guy Verhofstadt, who visited in September.

Vardakar urged senior cabinet figures to visit the border for a better understanding.

The former Northern Ireland secretary Peter Hain went on to say that this proposal of pre-registering "would be risking immediate civil unrest".

Mr Varadkar said when he visited the US-Canada border he saw "a hard border...with customs posts, people in uniforms with arms and dogs".

"I can't see anything negative in a British cabinet minister viewing the Border, seeing what it looks like", he said.

The Irish premier Leo Varadkar yesterday said: "You can read as many briefing documents as you like, sometimes you need to see things with your own eyes". "And to see that it is invisible".

Speaking at the South by South West festival in Austin, Mr Varadkar said if a hard border was introduced post-Brexit it could lead to vandalism.

Just under a quarter of people (24%) are not happy with how the government is handling Brexit while 32% of people said they didn't know.

"And they will become vandalised".

The news follows a leaked letter to the Prime Minister written by Mr Johnson, which claimed it was "wrong" to try to maintain no border on the island of Ireland after Brexit. Do you accept that, or do you then put in a guard to stop them doing that. It followed claims from the Foreign Secretary, which were quickly ridiculed, that the border was no different to the boundary between the London boroughs of Islington and Camden. "If Brexit is a threat to that, everyone is entitled to keep an open mind about whether it's the right path for the country".
