Millennial 26-30 railcard website crashes as thousands scramble for discount travel

A trial is going ahead for the new railcard

A trial is going ahead for the new railcard

There was widespread anger as the release of the millennial railcard descended into chaos after the government only made a small number available.

Those on the website took to Twitter to express frustration.

The railcard was announced a year ago in the Budget by Chancellor Phillip Hammond when he said:"I can announce a new railcard for those aged 26 to 30, giving 4.5 million more young people a third off their rail fares".

Some compared the difficulty of getting a card to the white hot rage felt by those familiar with attempting to buy in-demand tickets to Glastonbury.

Many have complained that the railcard is not available for everyone who is eligible, and there are fears the issue could be kicked into the long grass because National Rail has refused to confirm whether the railcard will be available to everyone after the trial.

Many felt a cap on the amount of railcards available was thoroughly unfairWhile others were left raging at the amount of time it took to actually get oneSome smug travellers actually did manage to get a card despite lengthy waitBut it didn't seem to have the intended impact on millennials' opinion on politics...

It must be bought online and downloaded onto a smartphone.

Thousands of frustrated young adults spent hours trying to get their hands on the new 26-30 railcard, dubbed the millennial railcard, when it launched on Tuesday.

The card was previously only available to a limited number of people in East Anglia. "Please bear with us, we've got the whole team working on it and hope we can have it back up shortly".

A statement released on the National Railcards official Twitter account said: "We've had an unprecedented number of people visiting our site for the 26-30 Railcard".

This new card will costs £30 per year and will only be available digitally, meant to be used on smartphones.
