PNB Scam accused paid 'large retainer' to Arun Jaitley's daughter: Rahul Gandhi

Congress continues attack over PNB fraud while RBI initiates special audit

Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Monday sensationally alleged that Finance Minister Arun Jaitley's silence on the Rs 11,400 crore PNB scam was to protect the latter's 'lawyer daughter'.

As the opposition protests over the bank scam continued in Parliament for the second week, Rahul tweeted, "It's now revealed that our FM's silence on the PNB scam was to protect his lawyer daughter, who was paid a large retainer by the accused just a month before the scam became public". Rahul Gandhi tweeted. He was referring to a media report which said Arun Jaitley's daughter's firm, Jaitley and Bakshi, was engaged by Geetanjali Gems in December 2017 on a retainership contract which lasted barely a month. "When other law firms of the accused have been raided by the CBI, why not hers?" It is clarified that the entire retainer amount received from M/s Geetanjali Gems Ltd has been refunded back by Chambers of Jaitley & Bakhshi. However, before any legal work could be sent to us, a news item appeared in the media with regard to their involvement in a banking scam. We therefore felt it appropriate to unilaterally cancel their engagement and return their retainer fee.

The Wire, according to its Founder-Editor M K Venu, did not find the story worth publishing.

Jaitley's son-in-law confirmed this in response to a questionnaire by The Wire.

Both Choksi and his nephew Nirav Modi had allegedly defrauded PNB of Rs 11,400 crore before fleeing India in early January this year.

The CBI examined the documents provided by the firm pertaining to the diamond jeweller Nirav Modi-related mandate, which the company later reportedly terminated after the scam erupted on February 14.

The Indian government had revoked the passports of Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi who are being probed by the CBI and other investigation agencies.
