The Seattle Seahawks are keeping a key member of the Legion of Boom in place after releasing one of the leaders of the group last week. Monday's deal for last season's fill-in strong safety is for $13.95 million, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.

But the Seahawks decided not to force Shead to come back under the terms of that deal and released him so he can hit the market.

Shead's agent, Cameron Foster, told ESPN that the National Football League recently informed the Seahawks that Shead's contract was going to toll.

Shead spent most of the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list, ultimately playing in two December regular-season games.

McDougald, meanwhile, confirmed the signing with an Instagram message thanking the team Monday afternoon.

The move allows Seattle to retain some depth in their secondary, following the loss of cornerback Richard Sherman and uncertain future of safety Kam Chancellor.

Another day, another Seahawks is player out the door. Players such as McDougald whose contracts ran out in 2017 are officially free to sign with other teams on Wednesday at 1 p.m. Seattle time but can re-sign with their current team at any time.

Seattle has reached an agreement on a three-year contract extension with Bradley McDougald.

McDougald was fifth on the team in unassisted tackles with 45 and also had four pass defenses. He appeared in all 16 games, starting in the final six after Chancellor suffered a season-ending neck injury in Week 10. But it's thought the hope here is that McDougald can pair with Thomas as the safeties next season.
