Spit it out! Jamie Carragher's 13-minute TV apology

Spitting Carragher on the ropes

Spitting Carragher on the ropes

The Match of the Day and BT Sport host attempted to make light of the Carragher scandal by referencing the shamed pundit being dropped for Sky Sports' coverage of Manchester City's game against Stoke City.

Jamie Carragher has apologised for spitting at a 14-year-old Manchester United fan in the wake of Liverpool's 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford on Saturday.

The 40-year-old spat at the vehicle where the young Manchester United fan was travelling in following a brief verbal exchange with the teenager's father after his former club lost 2-1 to the Red Devils at Old Trafford on Saturday.

During an appearance on Sky News, after the spitting footage was aired on a big screen, Carragher called the incident a "moment of madness".

In the video the father of the girl can be heard shouting: "Unlucky Jamie lad".

I've let Sky Sports down, my family and the family involved.

"I didn't to be honest (see the girl), she was leant back".

He tweeted: "I've just watched Carra23 say sorry". It's hard to explain, it was nearly an out-of-body thing but you can't ever behave like that, it's unacceptable. "No matter the circumstances, you can't ever behave like that".

The 14-year-old daughter of the United supporter was in the passenger seat and claims to have been hit in the face by Carragher's saliva.

'There's no doubt what I have done is disgusting, I apologise for it, ' said Carragher, who has a daughter the same age as the girl he spat at.

A number of fellow ex-professional players, as well as those who have worked with Carragher in the media, have come out in support of the disgraced Liverpudlian, and while they have not condoned what he did, they have stressed that it is not a true reflection of the real Jamie Carragher and hoped that it would not lead to his sacking. "I was a role model, people looked up to me". No excuses he's made a big mistake.

"I've been on TV for 3 years with him and this isolated incident shouldn't stop us working together".
