Study raises concerns about lead exposure

Of environmental lead exposure, he said: "If we took that seriously, without knowing anything more about genetics, without any more expensive drugs, we could much more strategically reduce deaths from heart disease, which is pretty hopeful, actually".

As many as 412,000 Americans die prematurely every year - mostly from cardiovascular disease - due to historic exposure to low levels of the toxic metal, a U.S. study suggests.

The scientists analysed data from the Third Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES-III), a major study monitoring the health of U.S. citizens.

The condition is caused by muscle in the heart being starved of blood due to narrowed or blocked arteries.

This led researchers to conclude that 28.7 per cent of premature cardiovascular disease deaths were linked to lead exposure.

People with the highest lead levels had a 37% greater risk than normal of a premature death and a 70% greater risk of death from cardiovascular disease.

The findings are reported in The Lancet's public health journal.

Lead is most widely recognized as a hazard to children, who can suffer intellectual damage from even minimal exposure. But only 20% of Americans now smoke, while lead exposure is more common, affecting 90% of people in the study.

An global study has found that low-level lead exposure could be responsible for 30 per cent of premature deaths from cardiovascular disease in the United States. "Public health measures, such as [upgrading] older housing, phasing out lead-containing jet fuels, replacing lead-plumbing lines, and reducing emissions from smelters and lead battery facilities, will be vital to prevent lead exposure".

"Our study estimates the impact of historical lead exposure on adults now aged 44 years old or over in the United States of America, whose exposure to lead occurred in the years before the study began", he explained.

For example, people with the highest lead levels were more likely to be men, smokers, and less educated, with poorer diets, high cholesterol, hypertension and diabetes, all of which are risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

"In other words, they aren't saying that current exposure to lead in the environment is the main thing here, as much of the exposure would have been in the past when regulation was much less strict than it is now".

The study's authors noted that outside factors could lead to "overestimation of the effect of concentrations of lead in blood, particularly from socioeconomic and occupational factors".

Researchers said that it was possible these risk factors could confound the research and that scientists were unable to adjust for some other critical factors that contribute to cardiovascular disease, including air pollution.

Additionally, the study took only one reading of lead in participants' blood, when levels were likely to have changed over time.

The risk of succumbing to coronary heart disease doubled in such cases, the study found.

The new Lancet study estimates that deaths from lead exposure approach the levels attributable to smoking, which kills 483,000 Americans each year.
