Paulo Fonseca's men came to Stadio Olimpico in Rome, hoping to keep their goals safe from Roma's attacks, which would let them qualify into the quarterfinals.

Roma faces a stiff challenge on Tuesday in the Champions League round of 16, down 2-1 to Shakhtar Donetsk after the first leg.

They endured a nervy finish, however, as Shakhtar ended the match on the front foot despite playing the final few minutes with 10 men after Ivan Ordets was sent off.

A 1-0 win, after a 2-1 defeat in Kharkiv, took Roma through on away goals as Dzeko scored seven minutes into the second half with the game's first chance of note.

"We were patient. We knew that one goal could see us reach the quarter-finals".

Shakhtar came close to extending their overall advantage in the 13th minute when Roma defender Alessandro Florenzi headed a floated free kick into the box inches wide of his own far post.

But Roma quickly started to find their rhythm and Shakhtar goalkeeper Pyatov had to react quickly to a low Aleksandar Kolorov cross, palming the ball away from the path of the incoming Dzeko.

The home side came out with renewed goal in the second half and Dzeko delighted Roma fans when he broke the deadlock with a trademark clinical finish.

Dzeko also curled a shot from the edge of the penalty area inches wide in the 62nd minute before Shakhtar centre back Ordets was shown a straight red card in the 79th for hauling down the Bosnian when he was through on goal. Shakhtar goes home, though.
