Woman dies in Kelowna house fire

Kelowna fire crews were busy Tuesday morning putting out three fires in the city.

A woman who escaped a burning home in Kelowna early this morning was killed when she went back inside the inferno.

RCMP were called to assist the Kelowna Fire Department March 13 at 5:05 a.m., with a fully engulfed residential structure fire in the 2600 block of the Springfield Road.

Police say a passerby spotted the blaze and took action, pulling into the driveway and honking his horn repeatedly to alert those thought to be sleeping inside.

"Witnesses at the scene have told police that four occupants, including a man, a woman and 2 children were observed fleeing from their home to safety", says Cpl.

The cause of the blaze is still under investigation but it is not believed to be suspicious.

Kelowna Fire Department Platoon Captain Scott Clarke said that due to extreme fire conditions crews could not enter immediately.

When it was safe for crews to get inside, the body of the woman was found.

Her identity has not been released.

RCMP Victim Services and Emergency Social Services are working with the surviving family members.

Fire crews are were at the scene of the Springfield Road blaze putting out hotspots, long after sunrise and they're now trying to assess whether there was someone inside the home at the time of the fire. Springfield Road has since reopened. You can also submit photos, videos or news tips to the newsroom and be entered to win a monthly prize draw.
