Merkel ally eyes joint Western response against Russian Federation in ex-spy case

May announced Monday that the investigators found that the nerve agent used is a military-grade poison developed by Russians.

Press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said: "We've been monitoring the incident closely, taking it very seriously".

"The attack was reckless, indiscriminate, and irresponsible".

"Sanders said repeatedly that the United States stands with its ally, Britain, but it didn't join its conclusions about Russia's involvement yet", said Aaron Blake, of The Washington Post.

"They're still working through even some of the details of that".

Pressed a third time to be more specific, she said: "We stand with our ally and we certainly fully support them and are ready if we can be of any assistance to them".

The Trump administration has faced criticism for its muted criticisms of Russia and Russian President Vladimir Putin after the US intelligence community determined Russia sought to interfere in the 2016 presidential election.

Hours earlier, British Prime Minster Theresa May said it's "highly likely" Russia was responsible for the poisoning of ex-Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter.

She gave Russian Federation until the end of Tuesday to provide a "credible" response.

Russia, which has denied any role in the attack, said May's allegations were a politically motivated "circus act".
