Five English councils told to adopt integration plans

Walsall has been chosen as a pilot area for a scheme aiming to boost integration between different communities

The government's Integrated Communities Strategy will see £50m invested in schemes to improve community relations over the next two years.

The Government plans to trial the plans in five so-called "Integration Pilot Areas" - Blackburn, Bradford, Peterborough, Walsall and the London borough of Waltham Forest.

The plan includes schemes to encourage pupils to form lasting relationships with those from different backgrounds.

He said: "Britain can rightly claim to be one of the most successfully diverse societies in the world".

Nearly 800,000 people of the United Kingdom's 66-million population do not speak English, UK Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government of the United Kingdom Sajid Javid said in an interview.

The strategy is the latest in a long line of government initiatives to try to deal with one of Britain's most sensitive and enduring social challenges.

Dame Louise Casey, who wrote a report for the government on integration in 2016, said a the United Kingdom needed "healing".

The proposed Integrated Communities Strategy also calls on schools to teach "British values" and sets out plans to boost English language skills and encourage women from minority communities to find jobs.

This week she called on the government to set a date for everyone in the United Kingdom to speak English.

'But we can not ignore the fact that in too many parts of our country, communities are divided, preventing people from taking full advantage of the opportunities that living in modern Britain offers.

"We will put an end to this through our new strategy which will create a country that works for everyone, whatever their background and wherever they come from".

Education secretary Damian Hinds added: 'We want to make sure that all children learn the values that underpin our society - including fairness, tolerance and respect.

Some 63 per cent said the Government should use national events like St George's Day, St David's Day and St Andrew's Day to bring people together.

'These are values that help knit our communities together, which is why education is at the heart of this strategy. She made a decision to learn English after 15 years in the country, and it transformed her life, as she started to work for the family clothing business and managed to build a new network of friends, he said.

British Future director Sunder Katwala said: "Integration isn't just about British Muslims - it's an issue for all of us".
