Mississippi State Women's Basketball claims no. 1 seed in NCAA Tournament

The Bulldogs are in the Kansas City Regional.

The Bulldogs will open tournament play at Humphrey Coliseum on Saturday at 5 p.m. The victor of this game will face the victor of 8-seed Syracuse and 9-seed Oklahoma State Monday. This season, State set the program attendance record as 113,814 filed into the Hump this season, including an arena-record 10,794 for MSU's February 5 win against SC. The Bulldogs beat Oklahoma State 79-76 on December 3rd.

The Bulldogs (32-1) are making their 10th appearance in the NCAA Tournament and their fourth under Vic Schaefer.

Notre Dame (Spokane) and Louisville (Lexington) are the other two No. 1 seeds in the tournament.

"To be a No. 1 seed is extremely special", said senior guard Blair Schaefer, the coach's daughter. "They are obviously trying to fix what they had broken the first game so it just makes the mindset much more intense". The Bulldogs are coming off a stunning first loss of the season when they lost to SC in the Southeastern Conference Tournament championship game just over a week ago in a 62-51 contest. He's sent five of his six teams to postseason, including the last four to the NCAA Tournament. That game is over and the Gamecocks are now on the opposite side of this bracket for a second-straight year with only another national title rematch in the possibilities.

Coach Schaefer wouldn't mind that, of course, but he'll take the first game against NIcholls to start things off on Saturday. "I thought we'd get either Grambling or Nicholls, the two 16 seeds in our geographic area, in the first round".

"I think the committee had a little fun sending us somebody that we've already played", Vic Schaefer said.
