'TRL' MTV Overhauls Music Vid Show Again

Despite reports that the MTV music video countdown show was canceled, ET has learned that that's not the case.

Earlier today, TMZ reported that MTV had pulled the plug on TRL, citing internal emails from the network.

"It's thriving. We're expanding the franchise and will have three TRLs by summer", McCarthy tells THR.

Goodbye again, TRL (this time for good?). The network has secretly been working on a morning & night edition of the show over the past couple month that's dropping this Summer. The show will not be returning April 9 after its winter hiatus, but instead, MTV is going to "pivot to short-form content that will be featured on social and digital platforms".

When the show first aired in October, critics slammed the reboot for not including music videos and for featuring fairly lackluster performances to seemingly unenthusiastic teens. The latter will be pegged to MTV series like Jersey Shore and other late-night programs, and will presumably function similarly to Bravo's Watch What Happens Live, but with a greater emphasis on music.

"We're expanding to target different demographics and dayparts", McCarthy explained, confirming that "all three [versions of TRL] will be airing by June". We have no plans of not having TRL on our linear network; there won't be a time when we don't have it on.
