Naftogaz to hold talks with Gazprom in March

Ukraine's state-owned energy firm Naftogaz said on Wednesday it planned to tell Russia's Gazprom at upcoming talks that it expected Gazprom to fulfill its court-ordered and contractual gas obligations.

"In such conditions, these contracts become economically inefficient for us, " said Miller.

Gazprom also reports on gas supplies to Europe in the first two months of the year.

"After the unsuccessful attempts of the Russian monopolist to create an artificial gas winter crisis, the entire Europe has become convinced that Ukraine is a reliable partner that can provide transit in the most hard situations", Naftogaz said after the March 13 meeting of Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev with the head of Gazprom Alexei Miller who expressed new doubts about the reliability of transit through Ukraine.

The ruling has angered Gazprom management, who refused to resume direct gas sales to Ukraine in the beginning of March in protest, and said they were ready to terminate agreements with Naftohaz, signed in January 2009. Moreover, Ukraine's Naftogaz, following the Stockholm court's decision, meant to demand other penalty payments from Gazprom in 2018 and 2019, Miller said.

With Ukraine cut off from Russian gas supplies, there are concerns about a repeat of the gas crisis in 2006.
