Northwestern urged students on campus to "remain behind locked doors" but not long after the first emergency alert was issued told community members not in area that they "no longer need to stay behind locked doors".

But say they have found not found any evidence of a victim or a gunman.

Students and staff at Northwestern University in IL were told to take shelter amid reports of an active shooter on campus after 3 p.m.

"That could be a possibility that we are also investigating", Evanston Police Cmdr.

School spokesman Alan Cubbage said university officials had received a report of shots inside Engelhart Hall, which houses apartments for Northwestern graduate students and their families.

Police later confirmed in a press conference that they believe the incident is a hoax after police met with the alleged victim in person and found that she was safe.

Earlier Wednesday, Northwestern students staged a protest against gun violence, as part of the national walkout demonstrations in the wake of last month's Florida high school shooting. If on campus, seek shelter in safe place and stay until further notice.

Lewis-Kadiri, who works at Studio SLK, a hair salon across the street from Engelhart Hall said: 'We were just told that we needed to stay inside.

Englehart Hall, a residential building for graduate students, is about three blocks from the school's main campus.

Lewis-Kadiri said she didn't hear any gunshots but saw plenty of police activity.
