Trudeau, Trump want quick NAFTA deal

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau responds to a question from founder and director David Axelrod at the University of Chicago Institute of Politics Wednesday Feb. 7 2018 in Chicago

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said when American President Donald Trump talks about doing something, he does it.

The prime minister cut short a planned family vacation to instead tour factories and meet with workers - an attempt to ease their anxieties over the possibility the US could still impose new tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum.

Trudeau, whenever cross-examined from AMERICA multimedia, rejected the suggestion that Canada will have paid the U.S. to get omitted from the steel & aluminum tax obligation, and made it quite clear that the NAFTA agreements are not associated with those taxes.

Trudeau said the surplus of steel in the global market is not new and with American tariffs in place, some countries might try to ship their products to the US through Canada.

"There is a global overcapacity issue and we are very pleased to work with our allies and friends to continue to counter that problem", he said.

"If they (the U.S.) actually go forward with tariffs on Canada on the basis of national security, it sort of is clear to the world they're not actually focused on national security".

Asked what he would do if Trump changed course and imposed duties on Canada, Trudeau said, "we'll see when we get to that point". "We'll always be at the table", Champagne said.

Sean Donnelly, who heads Canada's largest steel manufacturer, added that the government must put resources in place to ensure cheap steel is not diverted to Canada after Trump decided last week to impose a 25 percent tariffs on steel imports.

"I'm really happy to be having the kind of conversations we're having this week instead of the conversations we might have had had the American decision gone differently last week", Trudeau told the workers.

Both countries are also exempt for the time being on a proposed 10 per cent tariff on aluminium exports to the States.

Trudeau's comments came during a tour of Canadian steel-producing towns, where he is showing support for workers in the industry.

These include: dramatically limiting Canadian and Mexican access to USA government procurement contracts; a 50 percent United States content and 85 percent North American content requirements for automobiles to be tariff-free; and the dismantling of Canadian barriers on dairy and poultry imports.

Earlier in the day several politicians joined the Prime Minster at a roundtable discussion where Trudeau listened to industry leaders and union representatives.

NAFTA talks started seven months ago and the U.S.is starting to get antsy about getting a deal.
