United Airlines mistakenly sends dog to Japan instead of Kansas

Kansas family's dog put on flight to Japan following airline mix-up

Kara Swindle flew with the airline from OR to Kansas City, Missouri with her two children as the family is in the process of moving homes, reported KCTV.

United says the error happened during the dogs' connection in Denver. "We have notified our customers that their pets have arrived safely and will arrange to return the pets to them as soon as possible".

As first reported by KCTV in Kansas City, Missouri, a German Shepherd named Irgo was flown from OR to Denver on Tuesday and instead of getting on a connecting flight to Missouri, ended up on a flight to Japan.

Instead, the family was met with a Great Dane they had never seen before.

After Swindle and her two children arrived in the city on a different flight, they went to a United cargo facility to pick up their family pet.

"I just want to know where my dog is", Swindle told KCTV.

She also has no desire to go to Japan. While the airline originally told Swindle that her dog could be quarantined for up to two weeks, they have since promised that a veterinarian will check on him in the airport and put him on a flight to Wichita, Kan.

"At this point all I can do is be hopeful that my dog is going to be OK", said owner Kara Swindle. "I don't know what else to do at this point. We apologize for this mistake, and we are following up with the vendor kennel where they were kept overnight to understand what happened". "She sat in the airplane aisle on the floor crying, and all of surrounding passengers were utterly stunned", fellow passenger Maggie Gremminger wrote in a series of tweets detailing the incident. "I know we have many important things to do but this is important too".

It did not help United Airlines' case that this story broke in the same week that a small dog died in a plane's overhead bin, where it was placed at the request of a flight attendant.

This is not the first time United has come under scrutiny for its treatment of animals.
