Trae Young Confirms He's Leaving Oklahoma To Enter NBA Draft

Oklahoma freshman guard Trae Young announced Tuesday that he will forego his final three seasons of collegiate eligibility and declare for the 2018 NBA Draft. Once there, the Sooners were like their star: one-and-done.

"The 6'2", 180-pound point guard was the talk of the college basketball world for much of the season. By dishing out 22 assists against Northwestern State on December 19, he tied the NCAA record for most assists in a game (assists became official in 1983-84) while breaking both Oklahoma and Big 12 records (both were 18 assists). Young deleted all his old pictures and started fresh in August, posting a picture in a black hoodie that read "Just a Kid From Norman" and talking about a new chapter. But majority involve basketball, from the height of making magazine covers to the tension of barely squeezing into the NCAA Tournament.

The 11th-seeded Sooners point man had 28 points and eight assists in a season-ending overtime loss to No. 7 Rhode Island in the first-round of the NCAA tournament last week. He announced the move on Twitter and posted the reasons for his decision on ESPN early Tuesday, saying he was ready to put in the work needed to play in the National Basketball Association. Of those six appearances, the furthest they've reached in the competition was the National Championship game in 1941 but in recent times their Sweet Sixteen appearance in 2008 was the best.

In ESPN's latest mock draft, analyst Jonathan Givony projects Young will be selected with the No. 8 overall pick.

Young grabbed headlines early in the season when he scored 43 points against OR on November 26 and less than a month later tied the NCAA record with 22 assists against Northwestern State.

And so Young moves on to even bigger things and bigger arenas, with more opportunities and more challenges ahead. "He positioned himself to be a lottery pick".
