Clocks going forward 2018

But why do we change the clocks at this time of year?

GET ready for longer and brighter evenings when the clock goes forward by one hour tomorrow morning.

The clocks will go back again on Sunday, October 28, 2018.

Other countries also observe the custom but call it Daylight Saving Time (DST).

This tradition of moving our clocks forward and backwards by one hour is relatively new - it was only introduced to the United Kingdom in 1916.

In the years that followed, clocks continued to be advanced by one hour each spring and put back by an hour each autumn until July 1945.

Daylight SavingTime (DST) is the official time adopted in the US, Canada and Australia for moving clocks forward by one hour during the summer months.

Research suggests that the one-hour time change twice a year can throw off your body clock; but only least temporarily.

Whether Daylight Saving Time is effective is the topic of much debate.

The current system has been in place since 1972.

But data later revealed that vehicle accidents rose in the morning when there was less light, although they decreased in the evenings over two winters.

A European Parliament study found that member nations' energy consumption falls by between 0.5% and 2.5%, depending on the latitude of state in question as a result of daylight saving, while an increase in traffic accidents is recorded in the days immediately following the change.

During these summers Britain was two hours ahead of GMT and operating on British Double Summer Time (BDST).
