The actor blamed Facebook's mishandling of user data by Cambridge Analytica, a UK-based political data-analytics firm that obtained unauthorised information on 50 million users without their knowledge or consent. Social media's darker side has been in the news ever since.

Last week, authorities in the United Kingdom raided Cambridge Analytica's London headquarters, and the Federal Trade Commission opened an investigation.

On Tuesday, Ferrell made an announcement-on Facebook, somewhat ironically-that he would be deleting his profile within 72 hours.

"I know I am not alone when I say that I was very disturbed to hear about Cambridge Analytica's misuse of millions of Facebook users' information in order to undermine our democracy and infringe on our citizens' privacy", wrote Ferrell, best known for performances on Saturday Night Live and in movies like Anchor Man and Elf.

He continued, "I can no longer, in good conscience, use the services of a company that allowed the spread of propaganda and directly aimed it at those most vulnerable".

The actor became the latest celebrity to announce that he is leaving the social media site in the wake of the Cambrdige Analytica user data scandal. While many political leaders have criticized the social network recently, and have called Zuckerberg to testify before Congress, political candidates and incumbents probably won't delete their accounts because they find Facebook "virtually indispensable", the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

'In this day and age, with misinformation running rampant, it's important that we protect the truth, as well as those who work to bring it to light.

Although she's used Facebook to stay connected to friends and help promote her charitable endeavours, superstar Cher deleted her Facebook account earlier this month, saying that there are things in life more important than money.

Major companies have also begun deleting their corporate Facebook accounts.

Billionaire Elon Musk also deleted the accounts of his companies Tesla and SpaceX, saying FB has always given him the creeps.

And in a surprise twist, Playboy announced on Wednesday that it too would be quitting Facebook. Hefner says his magazine was already struggling with Facebook's "sexually repressive" nature, with the recent security breach as the final straw. "Just don't like Facebook".

Many people have lost their faith in Facebook and the social media website has lost over $80 billion in stock market value.
