"Nightmare Bacteria" With Rare Antibiotic Resistance Genes Found All Across America

The CDC says "nightmare bacteria", or that's germs with unusual resistance to so-called last resort antibiotics, were found more than 200 times previous year.

The CDC estimates that at least 2 million Americans are infected with the so-called nightmare bacteria, and more than 23,000 die each year from these infections.

According to the CDC, 27 USA states are already dealing with this "nightmarish" super-bacteria.

A new breed of "nightmare" bacteria resists pretty much all of our antibiotics - and it's rapidly spreading across the US. The cases were scattered throughout 27 states.

The agency is coordinating a response among healthcare facilities, labs and health departments through the AR Lab Network, as officials noted health departments using the approach have conducted infection control assessments and colonization screenings within 48 hours of finding unusual resistance and reported no further transmission during follow-up over several weeks.

"Resistance frequently leads to delays in the administration of effective therapy, and a mismatch between empirical therapy and subsequent antibiotic susceptibility test results is the most significant factor in delaying effective therapy", the researchers reported in their study.

The report adds that in 11 percent of screening tests, in people who were otherwise asymptomatic, the CDC found a hard to treat pathogen that spreads between hosts and facilities easily.

In fact, the CDC report showed that one in four germ samples sent for testing had special genes that allow them to spread their resistance to other germs.

Testing patients without symptoms who may carry and spread the germ. The report offers a containment strategy, which Schuchat said will help "bend the curve or slow the spread of antibiotic resistance".

However, Schuchat said it is just the beginning of a lengthy process toward killing antibiotic-resistant germs.

Use of infection control measures, such as hospital gloves and gowns and special cleaning in the rooms of infected patients.

LaPook describes a sort of "SWAT team" strategy: "If there's an infection, they bring everybody together - the doctors, the patient, nurses, lab personnel, public health people". The genes present in antimicrobial-resistance bacteria do not only cause or spread infections. And they do things like isolating the patient, making sure people wash their hands properly - so simple, so important.
