Russian Federation and Iran called the use of force by the United States and its French and British allies a military crime and act of aggression. Putin demanded a United Nations Security Council immediately.

"We've successfully destroyed three buildings in metropolitan Damascus, one of the most heavily defended airspace areas in the world", he added.

Russian Foreign Ministry official Vladimir Ermakov said Washington would want to maintain a dialogue with Moscow about strategic stability after the raids, Russian media reported.

Inspectors from the OPCW chemical watchdog will begin their investigation Sunday at the site of a chemical attack near Damascus, a senior official said.

For the time being, relief prevailed as the West and most of its allies expressed support for action to curtail the threat of Syria's chemical warfare as backers of the Syrian government expressed outrage at what they considered an illegal aggression against Syria's sovereignty.

US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley on Sunday warned that a chemical attack could take place in the United States as well, if "we are not smart enough".

Satellite images from those companies appear to show extensive airstrike damage to facilities allegedly involved with Syria's chemical weapons program, CNN said.

Nikki Haley added that the United States ties with Russian Federation are "very strained", in part because of Syria, but the U.S. still hopes for the better relationship.

"Engaging our military in Syria when no direct threat to the United States exists and without prior congressional authorization would violate the separation of powers that is clearly delineated in the Constitution", they said.

Speaking on Fox News Sunday, Haley listed three aims for the United States: ensuring that chemical weapons are not used in any way that poses a risk to USA interests, that Daesh is defeated and that there is a good vantage point to watch what Iran is doing.

"We're not cooperating with them in Syria".

Canadian President Justin Trudeau said the country supports the decision "to take action to degrade the Assad regime's ability to launch chemical weapons attacks against its own people".

"Ali Akbar Velayati, the top political adviser to Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said that if you bomb Syria, that does not change the situation on the ground".

"I see desperation. I see cynicism", he said. Corbyn said in an interview with the BBC.

The three sites targeted were "fundamental components" to Syria's chemical weapons program, according to Marine Lt. Gen. Kenneth McKenzie.

- Theresa May told a press conference in London that joining the bombing campaign with the United States and France was the "right thing for us to do" in the wake of the "harrowing" assault on Douma a week ago. But they have refrained from targeting Assad's government, apart from a volley of U.S. missiles a year ago. A UN Security Council vote brought by Syria's ally, Russia, and condemning the US-led strikes was rejected.

President Trump speaks in the Diplomatic Reception Room of the White House Friday, announcing the United States' military response to Syria's chemical weapon attack on April 7.

A US official said that while top aides such as Defense Secretary Jim Mattis had persuaded Trump to avoid the tougher action the president initially wanted, arguing that that would have risked escalation with Assad ally Russian Federation, the administration is no closer to crafting a comprehensive strategy on the war in Syria.
