Barbara Bush refuses medical treatment, surrounded by family as failing health becomes critical

Barbara Bush, the wife of former U.S. President George H.W. Bush, is in "failing health" and has made a decision to no longer seek medical treatment, the office of the ex-president said in a statement from Houston on Sunday. Bush, 92, will "instead focus on comfort care" for unspecified health complications, according to a statement.

Bush married George H.W. Bush on January 6, 1945. Sons Neil and Marvin and daughter Doro were also by their mother's side at the Bush residence. Barbara Bush has always been considered the rock at the center of one of America's most prominent political families, as the wife of a president, the mother of another, George W. Bush, and the mother also of a former Florida governor and onetime presidential aspirant, Jeb Bush.

McGrath says Bush is "surrounded by a family she adores, and appreciates the many kind messages and especially the prayers she is receiving". They had six children and have been married longer than any presidential couple in American history.

Ms Hager said the former president "still says, "I love you Barbie" every night", describing their grandparents' close relationship as "remarkable".

McGrath said Bush was concerned more for her family than herself.

"It will not surprise those who know her that Barbara Bush has been a rock in the face of her failing health, worrying not for herself - thanks to her abiding faith - but for others", he said. "The President's and First Lady's prayers are with all of the Bush Family during this time", said White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders.

Mrs Bush's 93-year-old husband, the nation's 41st president, who served from 1989 to 1993, has also had health issues in recent years. He was hospitalized months earlier, also for pneumonia.

Barbara Pierce Bush was born June 8, 1925, in Rye, New York. Her son, the 43 USA president, is 71. Bush told an interviewer, "I sat next to her once, thought she was handsome, and I think she's very happy in Alaska, and I hope she'll stay there". After World War II, the Bushes moved to Texas where he went into the oil business.
