Haley warns Assad: Trump 'watching,' U.S. work in Syria 'not done'

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin will make the announcement by Monday and it will affect companies that are "dealing with equipment related to Assad and any chemical weapons use", according to US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley.

The televised image of Assad walking on gleaming marble floors toward his office, briefcase in hand, matched the rhetoric the Syrian government put out soon after the strike: the second U.S. attack in a year in response to suspected chemical weapons use has failed to rattle the regime and the president is in control. Angus King (I-Maine) said on CNN's "State of the Union" with Jake Tapper.

"We don't want to come to United States", he said.

Mr Trump called the operation a success in a morning Twitter post and proclaimed: "Mission accomplished". He added that he knew the media would "seize" on the phrase, but said it should be used often. "Godspeed to our military", he wrote.

President Donald Trump has warned Syria's government the USA is "locked and loaded" to strike again if it carries out new chemical attacks.

LIMA, Peru-Canada has become the latest to lay the blame for a deadly chemical-weapons attack in Syria last week at Syrian President Bashar Assad's doorstep, despite Russian suggestions to the contrary.

His choice of words recalled a similar claim associated with President George W. Bush following the US -led invasion of Iraq.

The then-president stood before a massive banner that read "Mission Accomplished", though USA troops had actually been deployed in the area just a month before.

On Sunday, Haley made clear the United States won't be pulling troops out of Syria right away, saying US involvement there "is not done".

"This is something we are not going to tolerate", Haley also said Sunday.

The aim, she said, is "to see American troops come home, but we are not going to leave until we know we have accomplished those things".

Much like USA statements, Britain's foreign secretary Boris Johnson said there are no plans to launch additional military strikes against Syria, but that his country and its allies will consider further action if Assad uses chemical weapons against his people in the future. The Pentagon said it gave no explicit warning.

When asked on "Fox News Sunday" about "how our relationship with Russian Federation has changed this week", Haley said that relations are "very strained".

Russian Federation and Iran called the use of force by the United States and its French and British allies a "military crime" and "act of aggression". Russian Federation has long backed the Assad regime and has repeatedly vetoed UN Security Council resolutions concerning chemical weapons.

The inspectors were due to attempt to visit the site of the suspected gas attack in Douma on 7 April, which medical relief organizations say killed dozens of people.

"Right now they don't have very good friends and right now the friends that they do have are causing them harm", Haley said, referring to Russian Federation.

"It is very scary", said Mercho.

Although officials said the singular target was Assad's chemical weapons capability, his air force, including helicopters he allegedly has used to drop chemical weapons on civilians, were spared.

Dr. Zaher Sahloul said he saw Syrian devastation firsthand when he traveled to the country on a medical mission two years ago.

"If the previous attack was a slap on the wrist, this is perhaps a slap on the face but nothing that destabilizes the Assad regime in any fundamental way", said Ayham Kamel, head of Middle East and North Africa research at Eurasia Group.

Though Heitkamp said, "Assad must be held accountable for his egregious human rights violations and the gassing of his own people - a crime against global law and humanity as well as an act of unspeakable cowardice", she never directly says that she backs the strikes.

There had been concerns that if the allied strikes had hit Russian military personnel, it would have further escalated tension. In fact, Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said no additional attacks were planned. He called for a strategy that leads to a political solution to "save it from the brutality of the Syrian regime". "That's what the president is referring to", she said.

Johnson told the BBC on Sunday the airstrikes were proportionate and showed "the world has said enough is enough".

But when pressed, he acknowledged that some unspecified portion of Assad's chemical arms infrastructure was not targeted.
