President Kenyatta mourns Kenneth Matiba

Retired President Daniel Moi is yet to send his condolence message to the family of Kenneth Matiba.

In a broadcasted address from State House in Nairobi on Sunday night, President Kenyatta eulogized the veteran politician as a "true patriot who loved Kenya and a nationalist who believed in hard work and building strong bonds of friendship for the betterment of all".

President Uhuru Kenyatta eulogised Matiba as a man who had selflessly fought for the rights of the people saying he will be missed.

It is not clear why the family had not sent their condolences more than 12 hours after the death.

Mzee Matiba was a true patriot who loved this nation of Kenya, a nationalist who believed in hard work and building strong bonds of friendship for the betterment of all.

"Mzee Matiba's strong fight for reforms, freedom of expression, tolerance and divergent opinion that saw him overcome great odds, including detention, won him admiration from friends, foes and cemented his stellar status".

In 1960 he worked as a high school teacher at Kangaru high school and 1961 he was promoted to work as officer in the Education Ministry. He also served as Minister for Transport and Communications, Minister for Health and Minister for Culture and Social Services. He was also among the pioneering Kenyan entrepreneurs with diverse interests being involved in a number of companies such as the East African Breweries Ltd and in the hotel and tourism industry. Indeed, he served the country with distinction.

Businessman Chris Kirubi noted how Matiba played a crucial role "in shaping the political landscape of our nation as a veteran of multiparty democracy". His accomplishments clearly demonstrate that focus, diligence, and determination pay. "His role in the fight for multiparty democracy of forward ever backward never helped transform our country to what it is today. Those who knew him can attest that he was selfless leader". We are privileged that he lived amongst us and thank God for the time we shared with him.

May the Almighty God rest the soul of Mzee Matiba in everlasting peace.
